Luxury Inn on North Carolina Shore Offers Full-Service Spa

Low season is the perfect time to experience the pampering of a spa vacation at Sanderling Resort and Spa, indisputably the most luxurious spot in the Outer Banks.
With its lighthouses and winds that propelled the Wright Brothers’ early experience, the Outer Banks area is known for its unpretentiousness and rental-house based vacations. The Sanderling is a luxurious anomaly.
The Sanderling has recently recharged and refocused its spa, opening up space to 8,000 square feet and taking advantage of views of the Currituck Sound. The treatment rooms have been refurbished to enhance their tranquil feel, and a Pilates studio as well as a series of new treatments and spa packages have been added.
Spa Treatments at the Sanderling Resort and Spa
One unique aspect of the spa is that it uses local herbs and minerals to produce many of its treatments.
The Russian Olive Refuge treatment, for example, includes an exfoliation and warm body wrap, followed by a rubdown with a special lotion made from the fruit of the Russian Olive tree, native to the Outer Banks. After a soak in seawater, you’re wrapped in warm sea mud, also of local origin, before a warm, pulsating shower.
For full-scale pampering, ask about the Sanderling Experience Package. The full-day treatment ($400) includes an exfoliation and hydration treatment, a 50-minute massage, a 50-minute facial, and a manicure and pedicure. The day also includes a three-course catered lunch.
Spa Suites at Sanderling Resort and Spa
The best room choices for the spa experience are the suites at the Main Inn, which is decorated with Audubon prints that reflect the origin of the town of Duck’s name, and whose sitting room features a crackling fireplace and views of the ocean and the sound.
The suites are all outfitted with cozy robes, and a complimentary break basket is served every morning. For more modern luxury, the suites in the South Inn also offer parlors and Jacuzzis.
Getting to Sanderling by Air
Getting to the inn no longer has to mean a tedious drive from Norfolk. FlightGest offers scheduled charter trips from Norfolk Airport to the Corolla/Duck airstrip, and the Sanderling hotel shuttle means the inn is just moments away. You can also charter flights from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Richmond (252-453-3656).
